James Mulkin

Associate Head of School for Academic Affairs

Jim Mulkin grew up in Bessemer, AL. He received a BA from Sewanee: The University of the South and an MFA in drama from Carnegie Mellon University. He spent most of the 1980s working for Joseph Papp at the Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, casting shows including Serious Money, the original productions of The Normal Heart  and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and six seasons of Shakespeare in the Park. Returning to academics, he earned an MA and PhD in classics at CUNY/The Graduate Center and taught at NYU, Brooklyn College, Queens College and the Trinity School. He began at Brearley in 2004 as a teacher of Latin and Greek and Head of the Classics Department, where he revived the study of ancient Greek in the Upper School.  Moving to administration in 2014, he served first as Assistant, then as Associate Head of School for Academic Life. He is the proud recipient of Brearley's Chair for Excellence in Teaching Award and Class of 1992 Award. He will retire in August 2024.
